Systems Aware Scenario Engineering for Life Cycle - Spanning Verification and Validation of Complex CPS
Abstract
Verification and validation (V&V) of contemporary cyber-physical systems (CPS) is increasingly challenged by the scarcity of system-level tests that adequately capture their full complexityincreasing the risk of emergent failures in safety-and performance-critical domains. This complexity stems from interdependence of intelligent components, operation in unpredictable and diverse operational situations, and rapid changes to system throughout its lifecycle. Since traditional V&V approaches often comprise static test-cases and lack adaptability to evolving system designs and operational scenarios, they fail to scale across the dynamic system lifecycle and lead to divergence between testing and system development. To address this gap, we propose systems-aware scenario engineering (SaSE)-a methodology for large-scale, high-fidelity, simulation-based testing across the system lifecycle. SaSE introduces scenario spaces that formally describe variations in both system design and operational scenarios, and integrates them with digital twins to deliver high fidelity simulations of varied design-scenario combinations. This bridges the gap between development and testing, allowing systematic validation of evolving system configurations and reducing the risk of untested emergent or corner-case behaviors. The methodology is demonstrated across multiple application domains, including automotive and aerospace, with a detailed case study of a distributed satellite system that showcases SaSE's ability to identify and mitigate crossdomain failures during early development.
