Harmonic Measurement in DC: a Case for Synchrophasors
IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference, pp. 1–6
Abstract
This study investigates an innovative approach in the field of monitoring algorithms in DC grids, emphasizing the potential of Multifrequency Synchrophasor Estimation (MSE) over conventional Power Quality procedures based on Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). While traditional methods deliver an idea of the harmonic presence in the signal, MSE enables the extraction of phasor parameters from the different components, offering deeper insights beyond THD metrics for monitoring, control, and protection. A specific focus is placed on the TrueDC algorithm, which leverages MSE to provide robust grid monitoring capabilities, excelling under low-frequency interference and ensuring enhanced accuracy when compared to plane average or ipDFT techniques alone. Experimental evaluations highlight the superiority of MSE, demonstrating its ability to actively compensate harmonics at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). These findings underscore the potential of MSE in advancing DC grid automation and power quality assessment.
