Efficient, tunable UV laser based on Alexandrite for future spaceborne wind LiDAR

International Conference on Space Optics (ICSO), pp. 132

Abstract

For future spaceborne lidar applications we present a novel design for an efficient laser emitter that is widely tunable in the UV region and has an extremely narrow linewidth at the Fourier-limit. The injection-seeded ring laser is based on a diode-pumped Alexandrite crystal with an intra-cavity frequency conversion that allows for high conversion efficiency and low optical load for the components. The Watt-level average power is achieved with high repetition rates of 500 or even 750 Hz and moderate pulse energies of 3 and 2 mJ respectively, which is sufficient because of the solar-blindness of the lidar technology. The electro-optical efficiency for the UV laser of up to 2 % and the low susceptibility to misalignment of the laser design are well suited for spaceborne applications. The beam quality is excellent with M2 = 1.1 and the linewidth in single-longitudinal mode operation is exceptionally narrow due to injection seeding and advanced cavity-control technology. A tunability over more than ten nm is demonstrated, allowing for various applications.
