Laser transmitter engineering model for the Aeolus-2 mission
International Conference on Space Optics (ICSO), pp. 146
Abstract
We report on assembly, integration and test activities regarding an engineering model for a laser transmitter assembly for the Aeolus-2 mission and on experiments and tests to verify our design concept. The laser is designed as an electro-optically Q-switched single-frequency seeded oscillator followed by two INNOSLAB amplifiers and a frequency tripling unit to generate pulses > 150 mJ energy and approx. 25 ns pulse duration at 355 nm wavelength with beam quality M2 < 2. With our representative Aeolus-2 bread board, UV pulses of 180 mJ energy with almost diffraction-limited beam quality were generated to verify the optical concept. Verification of the general thermomechanical concept was conducted by subjecting the representative FULAS laser to thermal stress greater than that expected under Aeolus-2 conditions. The FULAS laser remained fully within Aeolus-2 specifications without any readjustment. The engineering model oscillator has been integrated and is delivering excellent results. It is built entirely from space-qualified components, as well as the first amplifier will be. The design of these components was scaled for the second amplifier and their thermomechanical properties modelled using FEM analysis. One type of the scaled optomechanical mounts has been assembled and subjected to thermal and mechanical qualification tests under Aeolus-2 conditions. The tests were passed with margin. The laser design is not only ideally suited for the Aeolus-2 mission, but it can also be used without significant modifications as a pump laser for an OPO/OPA arrangement to generate laser pulses at 935 nm and thus also address the QLEO mission.
