Nonmetallic Composite Pipelines

Abstract

Nonmetallic composite pipelines are a viable alternative for transporting fluids in the oil and gas industry. These pipelines are primarily constructed from reinforced thermosetting resins or thermoplastic materials reinforced with fiber materials such as glass, carbon, or aramid fiber. Composite structure imparts exceptional mechanical properties, allowing nonmetallic composite pipelines to withstand high pressures with variations in pressure levels, temperature variations, and harsh environmental conditions while maintaining their structural integrity. This chapter provides an overview of the materials used for nonmetallic composite pipelines, the manufacturing methods, and its application benefits. Nonmetallic composite pipelines combine the strength and durability of advanced composite materials with the corrosion resistance and lightweight properties that make them an alternative solution to steel pipelines for transporting a variety of fluids such as oil and gas and also for energy sources that will gain importance in the future, such as hydrogen or ammonia.
