Simulation and Analysis of an Average Switching Model for a Multiport Active Bridge with a Medium-Frequency Transformer

International Renewable Energy Congress, pp. 1–7

Abstract

In the context of the energy transition and grid transformation the medium-frequency transformer has become a main research focus. One of the most popular topologies to achieve the integration of renewable energy sources and electric vehicle charging stations in the grid is the dual active bridge and its multiport variants. In this regard, this work presents an average switching model designed for a multiport active bridge with three secondary windings to simulate the connection of various loads to the MV-DC grid. This model simplifies the representation of complex converter operation and enhances the simulation efficiency. The model utilizes the switching function as well as current and voltage sources instead of semiconductors. Additionally, an intelligent feedforward calculation is incorporated into the control method. Simulation results demonstrate that the average switching model provides accurate representations, effectively capturing the behavior of the detailed model. This approach offers sufficient precision for studying control algorithms while minimizing computational effort. This model facilitates the development and optimization of control algorithms essential for the integration and management of dynamic loads by allowing efficient and accurate simulations.
