Inverse Decomposition Method for Complete Determination of Freestream Disturbances in a Hypersonic Wind Tunnel
Abstract
Hypersonic wind tunnel tests are often compromised by unavoidable disturbances in the test section flow, typically involving acoustic waves as well as entropy and vorticity disturbances. It is essential to quantify these disturbances over the relevant frequency range for comprehensive flow measurements. Over the past 60 years, the identification of freestream disturbances in hypersonic wind tunnels has remained unresolved due to a lack of time-resolving measurement techniques and the inability to validate reduced physical models of wind tunnel disturbances. Recent advancements in time-resolving instruments for measuring pressure fluctuations, velocity, and flow density, supported by high-resolution flow simulations of the entire wind tunnel flow field, offer a solution to this critical problem in hypersonic aerodynamics. This paper outlines the proposed approach and initial steps to prepare a representative hypersonic Ludwieg tube for this endeavor.
