Directivity patterns for road traffic auralization

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, vol. 156, pp. A120

Abstract

Auralizations enable the simulation of sound fields in complex environments. For example, they can be used to investigate the perceptual aspects of sound emitted by vehicles. As input for the signal processing chain, sound source models must adequately represent the acoustic spatial and spectro-temporal characteristics of real vehicle emissions. An in-situ measurement method for determining the velocity-dependent directionality of moving sound sources is presented. The work presents results for different vehicle types. Finally, the implementation of the directional characteristics into an urban sound auralization model is discussed in order to simulate the sound transmission in anurban environment including complex propagation effects.
