CO2 Absorbing Composite Materials: Fundamentals and Properties
CRC Press eBooks, pp. 189–199
Abstract
Rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and its association with global climate change has catalyzed intensive research on innovative strategies for CO2 capture and mitigation. This chapter presents a glimpse of the exciting world of composite materials designed specifically for CO2 absorption, elucidating the fundamentals of CO2 absorption, along with the basic aspects of the processes. It underlines the pivotal role of CO2 capture and storage in combating climate change, offering a comprehensive understanding of the context. Diverse array of composite materials like polymer-based composites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), zeolites and carbon-based composites have been unveiled, each scrutinized for their unique properties and applicability. The synthesis and fabrication techniques employed in crafting these CO2-absorbing composites have been outlined, providing insights into how these materials are tailored for optimal performance. Characterization techniques have also been discussed, which are essential for ensuring that the materials meet stringent CO2 absorption requirements. These properties dictate the efficacy and versatility of these materials in diverse applications, from industrial CO2 capture to renewable energy systems and environmental remediation. Finally, this chapter addresses the challenges and offers a glimpse into the future, emphasizing the need for scalable and cost-effective solutions, and integration with existing carbon capture processes.
