Nanoswitches: Resistively Switching Chalcogenides for Future Electronics
physica status solidi (a), vol. 221
Abstract
This Special Issue of physica status solidi (a) showcases selected highlights from the Collaborative Research Center 917 (CRC 917) "Nanoswitches: Resistively Switching Chalcogenides for Future Electronics".Overall, CRC 917 has received funding from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for 12 years, ending in June 2023.By bringing together researchers from RWTH Aachen (coordinating university), and Forschungszentrum Jülich, the emerging research field of chalcogenide-based nanoswitches was significantly enriched and expanded. The rational design of nanoswitches that can be reproducibly and reversibly changed between different states on very short time and length scales is the main focus on this issue.Such nanoswitches enable new storage and memory devices as well as neuro-inspired architectures for information technology. To tailor chalcogenide-based nano-switches, major advances in instrumentation as well as an in-depth understanding of the origin of underlying phenomena and unconventional properties have been mandatory.Challenges included the characterization of switching in these materials on nanosecond time and nanometer length scales as well as concepts for operando analysis.Sophisticated tools and methods have been built and utilized.Understanding unconventional properties has been enabled by bridging concepts of inorganic chemistry and material properties. This led to novel treasure maps which help to tailor chalcogenides for specific applications.
