Multimorbidity burden in severe asthma across the SHARP CRC
Epidemiology, pp. PA481
Abstract
Background: Multimorbidity (MM) refers to the presence of at least 2 co-existing conditions but the burden of MM in severe asthma (SA) is unclear. Aim: We sought to define the burden of MM in SA patients across Europe. Methods: We characterised the MM burden across the ERS’s SHARP CRC. Results: Eleven countries contributed data for 2690 patients, of which 1270 were from the Netherlands (figure 1). erj;64/suppl_68/PA481/F1 F1 F1 Prevalence of comorbidities varied by country. However, sinonasal disease ranked top in 8 countries while obesity, bronchiectasis and gastro-oesophageal reflux each ranked top in 1 country. The median number of comorbidities per patient ranged from 2 to 4 (figure 2a). Between 87-100% of patients per country had at least one comorbidity on top of SA (figure 2b). erj;64/suppl_68/PA481/F2 F2 F2 Conclusions: A wide range of T2, pulmonary, extra-pulmonary, psychophysiological and steroid-related comorbidities were reported for SA patients in each country of the SHARP CRC. Despite varying prevalence, 4 comorbidities dominated across Europe. Most patients had MM, indicating the large MM burden in SA. This emphasises the importance of adopting holistic approaches to support wider healthcare needs of patients with SA.
