Thermal machine tool error prediction during milling

Procedia CIRP, vol. 120, pp. 1510–1515

Abstract

During milling processes, almost the entire mechanical work is converted into heat caused by friction. The generated heat is mostly induced into the machine structure, tool, its holder and the workpiece resulting in a transient tool center point displacement (TCP). Such thermo-elastic machine tool errors can be modeled and corrected. In this paper, the TCP displacement through process influence due to cutting or friction forces through milling is modeled using data from a numerical cutting simulation. The modeled displacement is then used to correct the measured TCP displacement.
