LeiMot – lightweight engine helps reducing CO2 emissions

Transportation research procedia, vol. 72, pp. 1021–1028

Abstract

Weight reduction remains a primary focus for vehicles to achieve lower CO2 emissions. FEV has collaborated with six other partners on its LeiMot project (“Lightweight Engine”) to demonstrate how much potential internal combustion engines can offer. Major components of a baseline modern Diesel-powered passenger car engine can be made roughly 22 percent lighter thanks to additive manufacturing methods and increased usage of composite materials. At the same time, it was possible to increase the efficiency of engine through optimization of the cooling and oil circuits. Results of this research can be transferred to different engines with fossil, regenerative and renewable fuels as well as to the other powertrain components.
