Optimal Trajectory Design for UAV-Assisted Wireless Communication with Discrete Code Rates
IEEE International Conference on Communications workshops, pp. 1660–1665
Abstract
In this paper, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless communication scenario with practically discrete accessible code rates. The UAV is assumed to operate at a fixed altitude and is responsible for the wireless communication to a ground deployed user within a given operation duration. We characterize out the achieved throughput by taking the discrete code rate selections into account and formulate a throughput maximization problem optimizing the continuous UAV trajectory. To deal with the discrete features resulting from the practically finite rate selections, we adopt a mechanical equivalence based strategy for the trajectory design. In particular, via problem reformulation, we completely represent the trajectory design problem by a mechanical rope problem minimizing the overall potential energy of the rope. As a result, alternatively optimizing the rope shape in equilibrium state will be capable of equivalently addressing the trajectory design. Based on the discrete features in artificial potential field (APF) and the resulting impulse force field, we analyze out all the possible rope solutions in equilibrium state, while respectively assuming the rope in loose and tight statuses. As a result, the optimal rope solution, as well as the equivalent optimal UAV trajectory, can be eventually obtained. Finally, via simulations, we validated our obtained optimal solution under discrete code rates, while the impacts of different discrete code rate set on the optimal solution are also illustrated.
