Towards a control system simulator based on a digital twin for cyber-physical power systems

IET conference proceedings., vol. 2023, pp. 1344–1348

Abstract

The increasing use of information and communication technology in the operation of power systems requires suitable environments for the development and testing of new functionalities, but also training of the relevant personnel. In particular, large-scale communication failures and cyberattacks can put personnel in previously unfamiliar situations that may result in an immediate threat to the security of supply, if the wrong action is taken. In this paper a concept of a control system simulator based on a commercial control system and a co-simulation for power grids and communication networks is presented. A case study is presented based on the deployment of a digital twin of an exemplary medium voltage grid and the corresponding operational technology devices like remote terminal units, which are connected to the control system.
