Modeling active grid operation in a testbed for cyber-physical systems

IET conference proceedings., vol. 2023, pp. 3449–3453

Abstract

The decarbonization of the energy sector leads to transformation in the distribution grids. The expected increase of distributed energy resources and loads will pose new challenges to the distribution grid operators. Therefore, there is a need to shift towards active grid operation. However, active grid operation is dependent on the observability of the grid and the regulatory limits of the grid operator. Both of these factors can vary depending on the region the grid operator is located in. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate new concepts, processes, and methods for active grid operation while considering the possibilities and limits of the grid operator. This paper presents a co-simulation environment which allows for an investigation of active grid operation. As operation tasks a state estimation and flexibility coordination are implemented, which can be executed independently or in interaction with each other. The environment can represent different available measurement technologies in the grid, modelling different stages of observability. In addition, the regulatory requirements for the flexibility units of the coordination can be varied. As exemplary results the flexibility coordination is executed on a low voltage grid based on the results of the state estimation. Furthermore, the impact of different distributions of smart meters on the success of the flexibility coordination are analysed.
