{Mn6IIIMnIVDy2III} Single-Molecule Magnet Based on Cubane Subunits

Abstract

A new mixed-valence heterometallic nonanuclear cluster [Mn 7 Dy 2 (μ 4 -O) 2 (μ 3 -O) 4 (μ 3 -OMe) 2 (μ 2 -OH)(piv) 8 (dea) 2 (MeOH) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ](NO 3 )·H 2 O ( 1 ) (where Hpiv = pivalic acid) was prepared from the reaction of Mn(piv) 2 with Dy(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O and diethanolamine (H 2 dea) in a MeOH/CH 2 Cl 2 mixture. The C 2 -symmetric cluster comprises an unprecedented {Mn 6 III Mn IV Dy 2 III } 28+ core consisting of two distorted {Mn 2 III Mn IV Dy III O 4 } cubane moieties sharing a common Mn IV vertex and decorated with two additional Mn III atoms. Hirshfeld surface analysis and fingerprint plots are used for decoding the intermolecular interactions in 1 . Magnetic studies indicate that 1 exhibits a slow relaxation behavior with an effective energy barrier of 15.2 K and τ 0 = 1.4 × 10 –7 s.
