Geometry and Trim Parameters’ Influence on Joined-Wing Flight Dynamics
Abstract
View Video Presentation: https://doi.org/10.2514/6.2023-3370.vid The applicability of traditional aircraft design methods to unconventional aircraft is not well understood, although these designs promise vast improvements in aircraft efficiency. Selecting a new aircraft’s configuration strongly depends on the confidence in the knowledge on effects of parameter changes. With a large parameter study of 1600 different configurations, this publication aims to shed light on the influence of trim and geometry parameters on joined-wing flight dynamics. It is shown that approximations developed for conventional aircraft work similarly well for joined-wing configurations. The publication investigates the effects of static margin, trimmed lift coefficient, horizontal and vertical stagger, as well as front wing sweep on the longitudinal eigenvalues and the accuracy of the conventional approximations.
