Dedicated PET/MRI Research Systems based on the Hyperion III Detector Platform

Nuklearmedizin - NuclearMedicine, vol. 62, pp. 165

Abstract

Ziel/Aim The clinical research community demands a variety of dedicated PET and PET/MRI scanners. As this is a relatively small marked, leading industries are not providing any solutions. Hence, a very flexible detector platform was needed to construct the envisioned devices. In first projects, three different PET/MRI research prototype systems have been created: A dedicated breast insert with two simultaneously working PET rings (Hypmed consortium), A MR-Linac radiotherapy planning device with a 70 cm bore diameter (UMC Utrecht, Philips, Futura), and a brain insert for a Siemens 7T MRI scanner (FZ Juelich). Methodik/Methods The platform comprises the complete acquisition chain from sensors, electronics, readout and processing servers, as well as in-depths analysis, control, and calibration software. The first implementation of the PET detectors are based on Philips digital SiPMs and was coupled to different L(Y)SO scintillation arrays for the three different applications. The platforms unique feature of thin, flexible, but rugged cables between the detectors and the readout electronics enabled the construction of the dedicated shapes for the three different applications. Ergebnisse/Results The three systems were installed at the respective hospitals and research sites. Simultaneous phantom images were acquired with the breast insert and the whole body scanner. The brain insert is currently put into operation and first images are expected soon. PET/MRI compatibility studies were successfully conducted. Schlussfolgerungen/Conclusions The platform already enabled the successful construction and operation of three different PET/MRI systems. This demonstrates the flexibility of the platform, which can be used for more for application-specific scanners in the near future. Publication History Article published online: 30 March 2023 © 2023.
