Abstract

An overview is given of the most important historical developments in fiber extraction and production from ancient times until the present day. For many fibers, detailed explanations are given in the respective chapters. The history of man-made fiber production is explained in more detail here, because many developments build upon each other and took place within a relatively short period of about 70 years. Hence, the description is largely in chronological order.
