Concept for Distributed Field Oriented Control of Twelve-Phase Permanent Magnet Machine

International Conference on Power, Energy and Innovations (ICPEI), pp. 1–4

Abstract

Accurate control of multi-phase machines requires detailed knowledge of the machine parameters. Higher harmonics in the inductance profile and inductive coupling between phases are often neglected in established control approaches. This paper presents a field-oriented control (FOC) method, utilizing multiple three-phase systems without neglecting these effects. An open-delta twelve-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is used as an application example. The functionality of the distributed FOC scheme is verified through comparison with the stator voltage equation and demonstrated in a simulation model. A comparison is made between the presented method and a conventional FOC approach. Two cases of distributed FOC are also simulated. It is concluded that the completely decoupled model shows a faster response and is better suited for easier modification and scalability.
