Synchronous Optimal Pulse Width Modulation for Salient Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines Considering Spatial Harmonics

International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS), pp. 1–6

Abstract

Optimal pulse patterns are a well-known approach to minimize the harmonic content of the phase currents when the ratio between the switching frequency and the fundamental electric frequency is low. Usually, the underlying assumption is a purely sinusoidal back EMF voltage. This paper addresses the design-specific spatial harmonics which lead to a distorted back EMF voltage and therefore have an impact on the phase currents. A mathematical formulation is presented which uses the degrees of freedom within half wave symmetric patterns to inject harmonic voltages that counteract the back EMF harmonics. The concept is validated by simulations with an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine with concentrated windings driven by a two-level inverter.
