Accurate FEA-Based Modeling of IPMSMs Operating Under High Magnetic Utilization

International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS), pp. 1–6

Abstract

In this work, an automotive interior permanent-magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) with double V-shape rotor magnets under high magnetic utilization is investigated. Most IPMSM models nowadays use finite element analyses (FEAs) to build look-up-tables in order to account for the dependency of the direct and quadrature inductances (Ldand Lq) on the values of the direct and quadrature currents (idand iq). However, these models make assumptions that lead to inaccuracy of the machine’s parameters. First, that the difference between the differential inductances and the absolute inductances of the machine is neglected; second, that there is no cross-coupling between the inductances (Ldqand Lqd); and third, that all the magnet flux linkage is oriented along the d-axis, while ignoring the q-axis magnet flux linkage. The effects of these three assumptions can be considerable according to the results of this study. In this paper, an analysis of the saturation effects of the material with a focus on the often-neglected quantities is performed. The parameters of the extended model of the IPMSM, derived from finite element analyses, are contrasted with those derived for the simplified model of the machine.
