An extended optimization model for decentral multi-energy systems including cold district heating for the integration of renewable heating and cooling
IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe), pp. 1–5
Abstract
The latest generation of district heating networks, the so-called cold district heating networks, are characterised by a system temperature between 5°C and 35°C. This allows for the efficient integration of renewable heat sources with low supply temperatures. Furthermore, cold district heating networks enable the district’s cooling demand to be met centrally. These advantages can play an important role in the future design of sustainable decentralized energy systems, as the heating sector is still predomiantly fueld by fossile resources and cooling demands rise. In this context, this paper highlights the modelling of cold district heating networks in an existing multi-criteria optimization model for decentral multi-energy systems. This enables the possibility to investigate the techno-economic and -ecologic efficiency of cold district heating networks and their competition and synergies with other design options especially in the interlinked heat, cooling and electricity sectors. Exemplary results of the applied model exhibit the required and achieved detail in the modeling. For the analysed district, we identify an optimal grid temperature of 18°C. The main parameters influencing this ideal grid temperature are the grid heat pumps efficiency and the heat losses within the grid.
