Methods for Exerting and Sensing Force in Polymer Materials Using Mechanophores

ChemPlusChem, vol. 85, pp. 1089

Abstract

The Front Cover shows the mechanochemically induced retro-Diels–Alder reaction of the adduct of a π-extended anthracene and maleimide to yield highly fluorescent anthracenes. Embedded into polymers, these “mechanophores” allow the precise localization of damage to macromolecular materials ranging from the macro- to the microscale. This mechanophore motif as well as other force-responsive molecules are reviewed with regard to their efficient activation and quantification. More information can be found in the Minireview by M. Stratigaki and R. Göstl (DOI: 10.1002/cplu.201900737).
