Abstract

The consideration of seepage through a rock mass is of great importance for the planning and the construction of dams. This applies also to the stability of slopes and underground openings, if the latter are located underneath the ground-water level. The forces resulting from seepage are to be taken into account for the computation and the assessment of the stability of constructions in rock. The chapter elucidates conceptual models of seepage flow through a rock mass based on the friction factor equations for flow through fissures. It demonstrates by practical examples how the forces transmitted from the seepage-water to the rock and the quantity of seepage water can be determined. In the light of several examples, the chapter discusses measures for grouting and drainage.
