Implementation and parametrization of transformer with saturation effects for the simulation of temporary overvoltages

IET conference proceedings., vol. 2021, pp. 458–462

Abstract

Due to the high non-linearity of the saturation behaviour of a transformer, it must be modelled in as much detail as possible to be able to estimate the effects of system disturbances such as TOV with sufficient accuracy. A comparison of transformer measurements and conventional adjustment rules reveals that these are not always able to reproduce this behaviour adequately. This paper uses methods of parameter identification and polynomial regression to improve the modelling of saturation effects of transformers. Both methods improve accuracy of the saturation characteristics. A transformer model capable of using the adjusted parametrization was implemented in an open-source simulation software. Simulations validated the model and methods as well as highlighted the non-linear behaviour and therefore necessary accuracy of the parameters. Especially regarding the generated harmonics, detailed saturation characteristics are essential.
