EMERGENCY POWER SUPPLY USING TEMPORARY ISLANDED MICROGRIDS - DESIGN AND VERIFICATION OF ENERGY MANAGEMENT ALGORITHM

IET conference proceedings., vol. 2021, pp. 1587–1591

Abstract

Currently, temporary islanded microgrid (TIM) operation of existing distribution grids is investigated as part of bottom-up grid restoration concepts to enhance power system resilience. The focus of this paper is to present a designed energy management (EM) algorithm for TIM operation and to verify it using simulations. The EM algorithm uses forecasts to calculate new power set points for the distributed generation units and furthermore can expand or reduce the topology of the TIM. Additionally certain feeders can be prioritised by the resupply strategy. Exemplary results of a simulated German medium voltage (MV) grid operating as a TIM with measurement data from the year 2017 show that the EM algorithm is suitable to achieve the required minimum operating time of 24 h in 70 % of the investigated scenarios. The developed tool can also be used for DSOs to investigate the potential of their grid areas for TIM operation.
