4.4 Standards and Trends in Solid‐State Characterization Techniques: Infrared ( IR ) Spectroscopy

Methods and principles in medicinal chemistry, pp. 151–164

Abstract

Infrared spectroscopy is a well-established and commonly used analytical technique in pharmaceutical research and development processes. It is possible to differentiate polymorphs by infrared radiation as long as the changes are not too small to impact the resulting infrared spectrum. Distinguishing polymorph and solvate forms of a substance and different salt forms can be possible. Different measurement setups and applications for identification and relative quantification of polymorph and solvate forms in a final solid dosage form are presented. The limitations of the technique are elucidated.
