Adaptive and Responsive Design

Abstract

This chapter explains how survey design features can be adapted to specific characteristics of sample elements in order to achieve a trade-off between costs and quality. Particularly, it focuses on adaptive and responsive survey designs (ASD/RSD) that include web as a design feature to be varied among elements. ASD and RSD are a natural choice for surveys that employ web data collection; response rates are relatively low, and extra effort may be allocated to subpopulations with the lowest response rates. The chapter provides a basic introduction and some guidance in the implementation where web is possibly a design feature. It describes the theory, introduces the main concepts underlying these techniques, and presents a realistic application.
