Defects in Photocatalysis

Abstract

Defects are the reactive centers of solid materials and dictate their structural and electronic properties. They are of particular interest in heterogeneous photocatalysis as defects may serve as recombination sites of photogenerated charge carriers and induce bandgap narrowing due to new electronic states, which in turn results in an increased absorption. Controlling the defect chemistry of a material empowers researchers to design highly efficient photocatalysts.
